The Indian government is preparing to implement a new law to regulate AI (artificial intelligence). The main objectives of this law would be to address growing ethical concerns, potential misuse, and the distribution of false information.
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has publicly acknowledged the government’s openness to regulating AI. This regulation aims to balance innovation promotion and freedom of speech with the need for ethical considerations and accountability.
Vaishnaw said “Ethical issues in AI are a global concern, and India is committed to addressing these challenges through robust debate and responsible innovation. The tools developed under projects will ensure that India stays at the forefront of ethical AI development,’’.
“Fake narratives are a major challenge” faced by societies across the world. Establishing societal and legal accountability requires a significant consensus. “These are issues where freedom of speech comes on one hand, and accountability and having a proper real news network getting created, on other hand. These are things which need to be debated, and if the house agrees and if there is a consensus in the entire society, we can come up with the new law” he added.
India is actively developing AI tools and technologies to ensure that innovation is done responsibly.
While some specific details of this proposed AI regulation are still under discussion stage, this initiative indicates the government commitment to ethical and responsible AI development in the country.
