India is rapidly emerging as an AI (artificial intelligence) hub globally. The country is following a forward-thinking approach to ensure the safe and ethical development of AI. India’s government plans to establish an AI safety institute to ensure this technology is used ethically and responsibly.

In October 2023, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) proposed an AI Safety Institute, following discussions with industry leaders and experts under the IndiaAI Mission.

As AI technology continues to evolve, the potential risks associated with it also advance. Here, an AI safety institute will play a critical role in:

• Developing extensive guidelines to ensure AI is responsibly used.
• Identifying and minimising potential risks like algorithmic bias and job displacements.
• International collaboration.
• Building a skilled workforce in AI ethics and safety.

By establishing this institute, India aims to safeguard its interests and contribute to AI safety dialogue globally. This initiative positions the country as a leader in responsible AI development, ensuring artificial intelligence benefits people without harming ethical standards.
